This test measures digit span — the number of digits you can hold in short-term memory and reproduce in the correct order. A number is displayed for a few seconds, it disappears, and you type it back. Get it right and the next number is one digit longer. Get it wrong and the run ends.
Digit span is deliberately content-free. The digits mean nothing, follow no pattern, and connect to nothing you already know, so vocabulary, education and general knowledge give no advantage. That is what makes it a comparatively clean measure of raw short-term capacity.
Your score is the longest number you recalled exactly. A single wrong or transposed digit ends the attempt, so the score reflects perfect recall rather than partial credit.

How Accurate Is This Test?
The measurement itself is simple and reliable: either you reproduced the number exactly or you did not. There is no timing, no hardware latency, and no display dependency, which makes this one of the more device-neutral tests on the site.
What varies is the strategy you bring to it. A first attempt usually measures unrehearsed capacity, and later attempts measure how quickly you learned to chunk. Both are real, but they are not the same thing, so compare like with like.

What is a good number memory score?
Seven digits is the typical adult result. Eight or nine is above average, and above ten almost always means you are grouping digits rather than holding them individually.
Why does the number stay on screen longer as it gets longer?
So that reading speed does not become the limiting factor. A fixed window would eventually measure how fast you can scan a long number rather than how much of it you can retain.
Does saying the digits out loud count as cheating?
No. Rehearsal, silent or aloud, is part of how short-term memory works. Everyone scoring above average is rehearsing in some form.
Why did my score jump after a few attempts?
You started chunking. Almost everyone gains several digits over their first handful of attempts and then plateaus, because strategy improves quickly and capacity does not.
