Why order is the hard part
Remembering which tiles were involved is much easier than remembering the order they lit in. People routinely recall the full set of nine positions and still fail, because two of them were swapped. That is the specific demand this test makes, and it is why the scores are lower than they are on the Memory Grid test, which ignores order entirely.
The sequence also extends rather than regenerating. Every level replays everything that came before with one new tile on the end, so by level twelve you are recalling eleven tiles first seen a minute ago. This is what turns it from a reaction task into a memory task, and it is why the difficulty ramps rather than resetting.
The consistent finding among people who reach the higher bands is that they stop watching the lit tile and start watching the shape the sequence traces across the grid. Three tiles in a row become a line; a corner becomes a turn. Once a twelve-tile sequence can be described as three shapes, it fits in a buffer that twelve separate positions never would.
Why order costs more than position
Holding a set and holding a sequence are different demands, and the second is considerably more expensive. Research on serial recall consistently finds that people can report which items appeared more accurately than the order they appeared in, and that order errors — particularly transpositions of adjacent items — are the dominant failure mode.
You can watch this happen to yourself on this test. A failed run at level ten rarely involves clicking a tile that was never lit; it usually involves clicking two correct tiles in the wrong order. The information was there. The sequencing was not.
This is also why the score here sits lower than on the Memory Grid test despite both using a grid. Memory Grid asks only which squares were lit. Removing the order requirement makes the same number of items substantially easier to hold.
The technique that separates the bands
Almost everyone who reaches the upper bands describes the same shift: they stopped tracking individual tiles and started watching the shape the sequence draws.
Three tiles down the left edge stop being three positions and become “down the left”. A move to the centre and back out becomes “in and out”. Once a twelve-tile sequence can be described as three or four movements, it fits inside a buffer that twelve separate coordinates never would — the same chunking that lets people hold eleven digits.
The practical version of the advice is simple: let the playback finish before you plan anything, and watch the whole grid rather than following the lit tile with your eyes. People who track each flash individually tend to stall around level six or seven regardless of how many times they try.
It is worth being honest about the ceiling. Chunking buys a lot, but it runs into the same limit everything else does: you can hold roughly three or four shapes, and once a sequence needs five you are back where you started. That is why the distribution thins so sharply above level sixteen, and why the people who live there are usually the ones who have found a way to compress movements further still — turning a whole loop around the grid into a single remembered gesture rather than four separate turns.
