The average adult scores around 7 digits on a number memory test. Eight or nine is above average, and anything past ten almost always means the digits are being grouped rather than held one at a time.

How to read your score
Digit span is unusual among the tests on this site in that hardware plays almost no part. There is no timer, no display latency and no input lag in the measurement — either you reproduced the number exactly or you did not. That makes the raw figure directly comparable between a phone and a desktop, with one caveat: typing a thirteen-digit number on a phone keyboard takes long enough that the earliest digits can fade before you finish.
What the number does depend on heavily is strategy. Someone reading digits one at a time is measuring raw short-term capacity, which research puts at around four independent items. Someone grouping digits into pairs is measuring capacity multiplied by chunk size, which is why scores above ten are achievable at all despite that limit.
The practical consequence is that your first attempt and your fifth attempt measure different things. If you want a stable figure, take it three times and use your best — the rise across those attempts is you learning to chunk, not your memory expanding.
Where the number seven came from
George Miller's 1956 paper “The Magical Number Seven, Plus or Minus Two” is one of the most cited in psychology, and it is the reason seven is the figure everyone quotes. Miller observed that across a range of tasks — recalling digits, distinguishing tones, judging positions — people topped out at around seven items.
Later work complicated that. Nelson Cowan's re-examination argued the true limit for items held without rehearsal or grouping is closer to four, and that the higher figures in Miller's data came from participants chunking without realising it. Both findings are compatible: four is the raw buffer, seven is what the buffer holds once you start grouping.
That distinction is exactly what this test exposes. A first attempt, before you have thought about strategy, often lands near five or six. Once you start reading the digits in pairs, the same person clears nine or ten. Nothing about the underlying capacity changed in those two minutes — only what counted as one item.
What moves your score, and what does not
Digit span is one of the more stable measures on this site, but it is not fixed. The factors that move it are mostly about the conditions you take it in rather than anything about you.
- Grouping
- By far the largest factor. Reading digits in pairs or triplets typically adds three or four digits to a score within a handful of attempts.
- Background speech
- Conversation, podcasts and lyrics interfere specifically with verbal rehearsal, which is the mechanism holding the digits. Instrumental music interferes far less.
- Typing speed
- The digits fade while you enter them. On a phone keyboard, a long number can decay before you finish, which is why desktop scores run slightly higher at the top end.
- Sleep
- Short-term memory degrades earlier under fatigue than most other functions. A tired attempt commonly costs a digit or two.
