Who builds these tests
Every test on this site is built and maintained in-house. Nothing here is a licensed widget or an embedded third-party test — the timing code, the scoring, and the percentile bands are all ours, which means when a guide explains what a test measures or why a score varies, that explanation comes from the people who wrote the test.
That is the whole basis for the guidance on this site, and we would rather state it plainly than imply a newsroom that does not exist. There is no editorial staff and no panel of experts. There are the tests, the results they produce, and the published research we cite where a claim needs more than our own data behind it.
Where a figure comes from somewhere else, it is linked. Where a number is modelled rather than measured — which is true of any benchmark band before enough results accumulate — the guide says so rather than presenting an estimate as a finding.
How the tests are timed
Every timed test measures with the browser’s high-resolution clock rather than a general-purpose timer, so start and stop are accurate to well under a millisecond. What that clock cannot control is everything between it and you — display refresh, input latency, and the machine’s own load. The guides are explicit about that rather than presenting a browser result as a biological one.
How scores are ranked
Percentiles come from a distribution held per test, and per mode where a mode changes the task — a click speed score over one second is ranked against one-second results, not against a minute of clicking. Bands are recalibrated as more attempts accumulate, so a stable raw score can shift a few percentile points over time.
