How the grid is built and scored

Each level lights a set of squares on a grid for a short window, clears them, then asks you to reproduce the pattern. Clearing a level adds a square and advances you; missing one costs a life. Your reported level is the highest you completed, not an average, which is why the number moves in whole steps rather than smoothly.

The pattern for each level is generated fresh rather than drawn from a fixed list. That keeps the test honest against repetition — you cannot memorise level nine — but it also means two attempts at the same level are not equally hard. A pattern that happens to form a recognisable shape is substantially easier than the same number of scattered squares.

Because of that variance, one attempt is a weak measurement. Three attempts and a best-of gives a figure that is much more stable, and it is what the percentile bands on this site assume.

What the level does and does not tell you

This test probes visual-spatial working memory: the short-term buffer that holds where things are for a few seconds. That is one narrow component of cognition. It correlates with some measures of fluid reasoning, but it is not an intelligence test and a level here does not translate into any clinical measure.

Treat the score the way you would treat a personal best in any physical benchmark: useful for tracking yourself over time, unreliable as a comparison against a stranger on unknown hardware, and meaningless as a diagnosis.

One consequence is worth stating plainly: training on this test mostly makes you better at this test. Gains in grid level come largely from learning to chunk these particular patterns quickly, and that skill transfers narrowly.
